Zanzibar

Zanzibar is the perfect way to round off a safari, offering white-sand beaches, turquoise seas, fragrant spices and the atmospheric Stone Town — a harmonious blend of relaxation and culture.

The wonderful world of …

Zanzibar is a place where time slows down and you can fully unwind after an unforgettable safari.

Together with Pemba and Mafia Island, Zanzibar forms an exotic archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Thanks to its many spice plantations, the islands are known as the “Spice Islands”. Zanzibar itself is a vibrant blend of culture, nature and relaxation.

Wander through the narrow streets of historic Stone Town, or choose from a wide range of excursions and activities. Snorkelling, diving, kitesurfing or mountain biking — Zanzibar offers it all. Prefer peace, sunshine and delicious local cuisine? Then this tropical island is the perfect place to recharge, especially after an adventurous safari or round trip through Tanzania.

What is the best time to visit Zanzibar?

For sun, sea and beach lovers, the months June to February are ideal: little rainfall, pleasant temperatures of 28–30°C, and excellent underwater visibility. The wettest period is March, April and early May, while November usually brings short, light showers.

The best periods for kitesurfing in Zanzibar are December to mid-March, and June to September.

Did you know…

  • Zanzibar actually consists of several islands?
The largest are Unguja (often simply called “Zanzibar”) and Pemba, together forming the Zanzibar Archipelago.

  • Zanzibar is also known as the “Spice Island”?
The scents of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg quite literally fill the air during a spice tour.

  • Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
The old town breathes history, with narrow alleys, Arabic architecture and beautifully carved wooden doors.

  • The shortest war in world history took place in Zanzibar?
In 1896, the Anglo-Zanzibar War lasted just 38 minutes before the sultanate surrendered.

  • Zanzibar has its own parliament and president?
The islands are semi-autonomous and largely govern their internal affairs independently from mainland Tanzania.

  • Zanzibar’s beaches enjoy almost 12 hours of daylight year-round?
Because the islands lie close to the equator, day and night are nearly equal in length throughout the year.
